Noise and grain

I like noise
I go out of my way to inject noise into my images, and leverage it
Noise is my friend

Digital imaging is subject to noise in a way that is unpleasant compared to the noise-like appearance of film grain.
In a noisy image, every pixel will have a noise amount that does not emulate film, and detracts aesthetically. It remind you of the fact that you are working on a fine grid of sensing elements, and not a beautiful continuum of photochemical crystals.

When I come across an image that I had to shoot at high ISO, that has redeeming qualities, I do my best to embrace the noise.

One technique I use is to simulate film grain. I do this by simply blurring and sharpening the image… But…

I do it in Lab space, and play with different processes for different channels. Usually I will process the lightness channel to achieve the grain look I want, and blur the a and b channels less, and without sharpening.

Try it 🙂
